Current Art

I discovered a New York artist named Mickalene Thomas who does highly stylized paintings of African-American women using acrylics, enamel and rhinestones. I have always loved the glitter and design of artists like Klimt, and Thomas interests me in that way.

Imitation being the highest form of flattery, I decided to try a collage, since this type of art is not my forte at all, but it looked like fun. And fun it was. I used wallpaper and Japanese papers and acrylics. The afro is bubblewrap painted black. I hope Ms. Thomas forgives me for this ludicrous counterfeit.

Sue!

Hiya!! Thank you. So nice that you dropped by. I think of you...!!
Where does the time go?

Oh, I like that. It would fit right in with her series, too. I think imitation is a good exercise, and it is still the purest form of flattery.

hey beverly,

i recently discovered the Red Shoe painiting on google. Wow, i guess imitation is the highest form of flattery. how long have you been following my work? do you live in nyc? how do i contact you? and how much does the painting cost? i would love to purchase it?

Mickey,

Ohhh, I'm embarrassed that you saw this, but honored that you're not upset with me. I'd NEVER sell this, but be happy to give it to you except that it's such amateur work that it's not worth the price of shipping it. I assure you, you wouldn't want it.
It's a big canvas board, and would be costly to ship to NYC. (I live in Asheville, N.C.) This is not my usual work. See www.artshackstudio.com for my work. And leave me a way of reaching you. Your blog has no way to contact you. Thanks again, Bev

hi beverly,,

i've been out of town but please contact me at Hello@mickalenethomas.com. and the shipping cost is no problem. I can make arrangements to pay for it. I love it and am extremely flattered.

Mickey
