Journal of Italy - Riomaggiore

Cinque Terre - May 24, 2006

The five villages of Cinque Terre which sit on cliffs above the sea are connected by hiking trails. Some of them are rugged (the one out of Monterosso being the hardest)and the last one out of Riomaggiore being a promenade, rather than a trail. While I nursed a cold, Carol hiked the first rough leg between Monterosso and Vernazza, then the next day she hiked the entire trail of the five villages. And she did it faster than any of the guide book estimates. A true athlete, this gal.

As soon as I was up (the 3rd day)we took the local choo choo down to Riomaggiore, so I could at least dawdle on the promenade. Too many other tourists had the same idea, but it was an interesting and scenic walk.

One of the stunning things about italy is the enormous amount of graffiti that is seen everywhere. We have it in the states, but you don't expect to see antiquities defiled as they are. But I must admit, some were artful.
