Journal of Italy - Last Day in Rome

Leaving Rome - May 21, 2006

Determined to make a good show, I put on fat socks and good walking shoes so that I could show Carol some of the sights. She didn't want to do museums and tours, so a hike along the Tevere (Tiber River) over to the nabe of the Vatican and then the ruins was in order. The leafy trees along the cobbled streets that ran parallel with the river provided shade and dappled Rome with the kind of light painters would kill for. As usual we dodged traffic like suicidal, grinning tourists.

Our hike was a success, even if I was a pokealong, but once I sat down, it was all over. Time to get back to bed. Achhoooooooo!

Carol amused herself for the rest of the day, hunting down bookstores and was terribly kind given that her traveling chum had pooped out on her.

The next morning May 22, 2006 , we were picked up in a minivan and taken
to the railroad station. We had a wait for our train, as it turned out, so Carol
read while I blew my nose.

In my fog of illness, I seem to remember taking a lot of photos from the train window, but like my health and consciousness on that trip to Cinque Terre, they seem to have disappeared.

At any rate, it was lovely rural countryside all the way from Rome to La Spegia,
where our big train stopped and we jumped on a local that took us through the five villages of Cinque Terre, our destination: Monterosso Al Mar, the biggest of the
towns.
