U.K. - Lichfield, Staffordshire, May 6, 2008

My trip began on a Continental plane that landed in Birmingham, UK where I was met at the airport by my dear friend, Mary McCluskey. We have been pals on the internet for almost ten years and were meeting for the first time! It was a wonderful and exciting adventure.
Mary and I took the train to her home in Lichfield. We deposited the luggage and headed out for a little walk to see the charming village.

Here is Mary with the spires of Lichfield cathedral in the background. Note three spires. Only one in England of its kind.

The path we walked into Lichfield was beautiful with Spring.

The town of Lichfield is charming and full of little shoppes and cafes.

Lichfield Cathedral looms over the town, dominating the skies, England's only medieval Cathedral with three spires. The present building was started in 1195, and completed by the building of the Lady Chapel in the 1330s

They were having a little flea market in the square of the town, by the
statue of Samuel Boswell. Lichfield is his birthplace. Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin is also from Lichfield.

We had absolutely beautiful weather the entire time I was in England!!

We did a tour of the interior of the Cathedral. There were Celtic artifacts (an angel statue discovered under a chapel) as well as the marble tombs of many odd and interesting personages from the holy to the infamous. (one Bishop who was a thief, a sodomist and a sinner!)

It is difficult to capture (on film) the grandeur of a Gothic cathedral as grand
and beautiful as this one.

Here's a better shot which I scooped off Wiki, so you can appreciate the size and beauty of it.
